We had Jazzcode at work yesterday, the boss turned 60. Great jazz, moving talk by the drummer about jazz being in the now and accepting the direction life hands you, wife paralyzed by stroke but lecture, one daughter blind, but feels lucky, could be worse, right - could be dead. Drummer played with Miles Davies back in the day. A really nice song by the base player too, Steinar Raknes, but I forgot the title.

Oh, forgot - the OP is one of my favourites. :-)

I heard Susan Boyd's version first, she dubbed Cameron Diaz in movie The Mask.

I thought it was great until he started singing. This should have been an instrumental.

Maybe this will become a Jazz Standard and someone will remove the vocals. I think that his intent was to deliver a specific message (via BlueNote):
The tug-of-war between hope and dread is evident in the opening track "a blooming bloodfruit in a hoodie," which is named in recognition of Trayvon Martin's terrible death yet contains the album's brightest tones and easiest grooves.

and so that's why this track is like that. More infos

John Coltrane - Tunji

 Zotlandia last edited: Tue, 24 Jul 2018 08:03:07 +0200

“Cuando un músico Negro* coge su instrumento y empieza a soplar, improvisa, crea; sale de su interior. Es su alma. El jazz es el único espacio de Estados Unidos en el que el hombre Negro puede crear libremente”.

Así es como Malcolm X describió el espíritu del jazz en un mitin político organizado en Nueva York en 1964. Entre el público se encontraba el músico de jazz John Coltrane.
